Spain Navarre

A Guide to Pamplona

Pamplona is most famous for its connection with the running of the Bulls. The city has been one of the fastest growing in the country and has had to expand out of the city walls and build more houses for the growing population. The way to tell the difference between the new and the old cities is that the streets in the new city are wider. The historical centre is where most of the sites can be found and the many districts that have been incorporated into the city.

There are many sites to see in the area including a stunnig array of churches including the 16th Century Gothic church of Santo Domingo, which has a fantastic 17th Century façade. However the main site in the city is the 13th Century Cathedral of Santa Maria Real though it was not finished until the 16th Century and so incorporates many styles. You must also try and visit the Palace of Navarre with its beautiful throne room and Goya’s fantastic portrait of Felipe VII adorning its walls. There are also many museums in the area which chart the rise of the region and the history of the town. Obviously the main attraction to the city is The Festival of the Bulls though once you have experienced the festival you must experience the rest of the city and you will not be disappointed.
