A Guide to Santiago De Compostela

Located only 50 miles from La Coruna, Santiago de Compostela was throughout history the main point of Pilgrimage for Spanish Christians as well as many throughout Europe. The city is the capital of the region of Galicia. The city is thought of as one of the main and important cities in Spain. There are many sites and attractions to see in the city. The main site is of course the Cathedral.

Started at the end of the 11th Century it has had many more additions throughout history and many influences including, Gothic, Romanesque and even Moorish. Just opposite the Cathedral is the stunning Gelmirez Palace, which is considered to be by many architects as one of the best examples of Romanesque architecture in the country.

There are many other sites to see including the many monasteries and palaces scattered within the city walls. Like may other towns and cities in the region Santiago de Compostela shares the beautiful surroundings within wonderful hills and mountains perfect for hiking and taking long walks. Santiago de Compostela is best on a days outing to view the sites. It is definitely a must stop area when passing through the region.
