A Guide to Taormina

Taormina is located between Catania and Messina on the east facing coast. Its popularity is demonstrated by the illustrious names that have passed through Taormina and include Goethe and D.H.Lawrence. In fact D.H. Lawrence made it his home for three years. The original town was built on the hillside with splendid views over the bay below.

Apart from the fabulous view across the Ionian Sea and over to the smoky Etna, the beaches of Mazzarò, Giardini Naxos and Isola Bella are the towns major attraction. Taomina is also famous for the magnificent Graeco-Roman theatre that looks down on the sea from its height. Other sites include the stunning Piazza del Duomo with the Cathedral of St Nicolò, the Church of St Agostino, the Church of St Giuseppe, Porta di Mezzo, Palazzo Ciampoli, Palazzo dei Duchi di St Stefano, and the Convent of St Domenico.

The restaurants have excellent menus with the local lemons being used in a fine selection of dishes. The fresh fish is highly recommended.
