France Nord Pas de Calais

A Guide to Dunkerque

Dunkerque may have started off as a fishing village but has now become one of the main seaside resorts in northern France as well as being one of the biggest industrial ports in the country.

Dunkerque obviously is always remembered for the part it played in the rescuing of the soldiers in 1940. Although much of the town was destroyed during the war the new buildings that were erected were not deemed to popular though they have now become more appreciated and the town is thriving especially with its beach resorts.

However Dunkerque does have a more colourful past, which is not so famous. The port used to be a haven for pirates. They used to dock at Dunkerque and then attack the ships in the Channel and the North Sea and return to port with their takings. Dunkerque is perfect for a day out to its beaches and to learn more about its culture.
