France Ile de France

A Guide to Versailles

Built in the 17th century under king Louis XIV who felt that he needed a palace to out do all other palaces in Europe and make him the envy of the continent. It remained as the palace of the kings of France until the French Revolution. It is one of the most stunning and extravagant palaces in the world as Louis was desperate to show off his wealth, which often meant diverting it away from supplying food to the poor and paying his soldiers.

The Chateau has been at the centre of many historical events as it was the residence of the kings of France for over a hundred years and of course the Treaty of Versailles was drawn up and signed in its infamous hall of Mirrors, the treaty was to gauge the damage done in the First world and the compensation that was to be given to the allies and this compensation has been a talking point between historians since it was drawn.
