A Guide to Montreuil

The town of Montreuil is a fortified town and has a fantastic view of the Canche Valley, which used to be covered by the sea. Once upon a time it was an important port for the French but has since become a smaller market town still with its architecture intact. The town has hosted however some of the biggest leaders in history indeed the great Emperor Napoleon spent time at Montreuil while his army was camped at Boulogne. And during the First World War the Commander of the British forces on the Western Front Sir General Haig based his Headquarters in a chateau just outside the town in 1916.

The town’s architecture is still intact including its Citadel and its extensive ramparts used to keep enemies at bay. The Citadel over the years has had many additions and alterations making it what it is today. When you go up to the ramparts and walk around the walls you can see a view of the town and the surrounding scenery, which is absolutely stunning and will leave a lasting impression on the visitor.

The Town will also be known to all those musical lovers who have seen Les Miserables will know that the story is set in the town of Montreuil and a perfect place for a fan of the musical to come and visit.
