Mexico Yucatan Peninsula

A Guide to Merida

Merida is located on the southeast peninsula of Mexico and is 198 miles from Cancun, and the average temperature ranges between 28 - 35°C annually. The town is known as the white city and is predominantly made up of Colonial architecture most notably the Cathedral at the centre of the historic part of the town.

Whilst there you can take a romantic horse driven carriage ride through the city. Merida is the perfect place to sample the Yucatecan cuisine such as the Cochinita Pibil, which is pork, served with beans and red onions and marinated in orange juice.

The area just outside the town has been converted into a hotel estate, which are very reasonably priced, much like Chichen Itza there are sinkholes with underground river systems which are fascinating and incredible to see. There are also many archaeological sites around the area showing the history of the Mayan architecture.

And a good day out trip would be to visit the biosphere preserving pink Flamingos. Merida is a very attractive town with lots of sites to see and is a perfect holiday destination.
