Spain Andalucia

A Guide to Almeria

Almeria is a city which has been heavily influenced by the Moorish era in Spanish history. The city is found in the south east of the country. The city has traditionally been a major rival with Granada and many have said that it surpasses the famous city in its beauty.

Though it has embraced and preserved its Moorish heritage the city has also been influenced by many other cultures including, the Romans, Carthaginians, Phoenicians, Arabs and Christians. There are many architectural sites in the area such as the beautiful cathedral and the stunning Alcazaba a 10th Century Moorish castle, of which one of the walls was made from the remains of a mosque in the city.

The Cathedral is worth a visit in itself, having been built in the 16th Century it has wonderful fortifications which were designed to defend it from attacking marauders from the North African Coast. There are also many other sites in the town with many more forts and the beautiful Calle de las Tiendas. Almeria is a beautiful town and is well worth a visit when in the area.
