A Guide to Terni
Terni is found in the south of Umbria and is one of the largest towns in the area. Its fame is mainly due to Terni being the birthplace of Saint Valentine who is celebrated worldwide on February 14th. The town is unique to many Umbrian towns in that it is primarily a modern town that had a significant role in the industrial revolution.
There is an abundance of sites which include the Church of St Francis and the Paradise Chapel, the Church of St Alò, the Church of St Salvatore, the Church of St Pietro, the Cathedral, the Roman Amphitheatre, Palazzo Spada, the Arrow of Light Obelisk and the Basilica of St Valentine, where the body of the Saint is housed.
Traveling slightly further from Terni you find an area of un-spoilt countryside that has many natural features worth appreciating. The Marmore waterfalls for instance are the highest in the whole of Europe, and the Piedilugo Lake is popular with visitors. The May Festival, the Cantamaggio, should not be missed with its traditional singing and dancing that honors the coming of summer.
