A Guide to Gubbio
Gubbio is thought to be the finest medieval town in Umbria. It has been perfectly preserved and is surrounded by divine countryside, including the green forests on the slopes of the Apennines. The town’s fine monuments to be found in Gubbio are envied greatly by much of Italy and the rest of the world: the Roman theatre, the Basilica of St. Ubaldo, the Palazzo dei Consoli, the Piazza Pensile, Palazzo Pretorio, Palazzo Beni, Palazzo del Bargello, the Bargello fountain, the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo and the Palazzo Ducale.
And not to forget the numerous ecclesiastic buildings: the Cathedral, the Church and Convent of St Francio, the Church of St Giovanni, the Church of St Pietro, the Church of St Domenico and the Church of St Maria Nuova, the Church and Convent of St Agostino where you can find frescoes by Ottaviano Nelli. May 15th is a significant day for those wishing to enjoy the town’s festivities with the celebrated Corsa dei Ceri and the Palio della Balestra taking place in Gubbio annually.
