A Guide to Amelia

Amelia is perched on the hill tops west of Terni, and looks over some of the most beautiful countryside in Umbria. The landscape is comprised of olive groves and holm oaks, and crossed by the flow of the Tevere river. The town is protected by its mighty dry stone walls that are four meters wide and eight meters high. The town itself dates back to at least Roman times and evidence of the ancient civilization are found in the Porta Romana, the water cisterns, the Roman houses and parts of the ancient walls.

The entrance into Amelia is still via one of the four gates in the walls. The medieval developments are also to be discovered with the church of St Francis, the church of St. Pancrazio, the cathedral, the church of the Madonna of the Five Fountains, where St Francis of Assisi resided, and the town houses of the noble families Farragini and Patrignani.
