A Guide to Monteriggioni

One of the charming Sienese hill towns, Monteriggioni is found half way between Colle Val d’Elsa and the city of Sienna. The small town is famous for its amazingly well preserved old walls that surround the town, 570 meters in total. This town is mentioned in Dante’s ‘Divine Comedy’ when he refers to the 14 towers that were built in 1260. The town’s two gateways are Porta Franca and Porta St Giovanni, facing towards Sienna and Florence respectively.

The Romanesque church in the town is delightful and in the surrounding area the Abbey Abbadia a Isola of 1001, with ancient monastic remains, can be appreciated. Craft traditions of Monteriggioni include the production of ceramics, and articles made from wood, granite and marble.
