A Guide to Forte dei Marmi
A peaceful town found on the coast of the Tyrrhenian sea, Forte di Marmi owes its name to the ancient port used for the transportation of marble. Its mild climate and relaxing beaches are very attractive, especially to those that prefer to escape from the crowds. A spot once frequented by the famous (D’Annunzio, Duse and Montale for example) is a demonstration of its special nature.
Both in the sea and the nearby lake Massaciuccoli you can find great opportunities for water sports, whilst the Apuane Alps provide for those that are interested in more mountainous sports. The sites of interest include the following: the remains of the Forte dei Marmi, the Iron Factory, the Area of the Roman Empire, the Museum of Satire and Caricature and the Modern Art Gallery. In August festivities for the patron saint of the town involve a magnificent firework display.
The fort itself holds many events including the Jazz’n Forte Festival and the famous Festival of Satire and Caricature where cartoon artists from all over the world come together.
