A Guide to Pantelleria
Pantelleria is an island located South-west of Sicily and is in fact closer to Tunisia than Sicily. It is the second biggest island off Sicily and was colonized by the Phoenicians in the seventh century B.C. Pantelleria has a well preserved collection of interesting archeological sites due to its strategic position. Historic sites include Muro Alto, the longest stretch of prehistoric wall in the Mediterranean. Then there is the Acropoli, the Barbacane Castle, the Village, the funereal monuments otherwise known as Sesi, and the bell cisterns.
The island is a popular spot for migrating birds and the Nature Reserve of the Montagna Grande is were you can find many different species such as the Cinciarella Algerina and the Beccamoschino birds and the Greek Tortoise. Places within the park to visit include the Lake Specchio di Venere, the Thermal Springs, the Piana di Ghirlanda, the Byzantine Necropolis, the Arco dell’Elefante and the Capperificio.
The island has a rocky coast line with some beautifully clear waters. The local produce makes the island a haven for gastronomical lovers. The local delicacies include lentils, the ricotta cheese known as tumma, capers and herbs. Some of the most popular dishes include the pasta with pesto pantescho amd ravioli con menta e ricotta. To accompany these is a selection of equally good wines. The white Vino Pantescho and Moscato are delicious, or you can try the raison wine Tanit.
