A Guide to Castelsardo
The characteristic village of Castelsardo consists of tiny houses built on the slopes of a peninsula of Volcanic origin. Castelsardo was a stronghold of the Doria and then of the Aragons of the Kingdom of Sardinia. The 'domus de janas', funeral architecture of the ancient island civilizations, are of great interest.
Castelsardo is the most well known village for producing Sardinian craftwork, with numerous shops selling ceramics, furniture, souvenirs made from cork, and rugs.
Inside the castle one can admire the Exhibition of Mediterranean Weaving, and in the town, baskets and many other items continue to be woven and sold. Sights to see include the Fortifications of the Bellavista Castle, the Church of Nostra Signora di Tergu and the ruins of the Benedictine Convent. The most important event is that of Lunissanti, ritual performed during the Holy week.
