A Guide to Bergamo
Bergamo is located on the hills of Fara and Sant Eufemia. The name ‘Bergamo’ translates as ‘dwelling on a mountain’. The city is surrounded by a captivating landscape and there are beautiful artistic masterpieces to be discovered, especially in the older park of the city high up on the hillside.
Visitors can discover and admire the city by using the funicular railway which transports you to the ‘Città Alta' where the most exquisite treasures are to be found.
These sights include the former Augustinian Monastery, Porta San Giacomo, the Fort, the Parco delle Rimembranze, the Cittadella, the History Museum, the Gomito Tower, Viale delle Mura, the Library Angelo Mai, Palazzo della Regione, the Church of St Michele, Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe, Piazza Vecchia and the Contarini Fountain, the Campanone, the Colleoni Chapel.
There are many other sites in the town such as the Basilica of St Maria Maggiore, the Baptistry, la Curia e l’Episcopato, the Archeological Museum, the Enrico Caffi Natural Science Museum, the San Gottardo stairway, the Donizettiano Museum and the Porta of St Agostino.
