Ravenna was an important commercial and strategic centre of the Roman Empire. The city has worldwide fame because of its rich variety of ancient mosaics which has led to a UNESCO award being given to the town. Ravenna has a rich cultural history from the Roman Empire to that of the late Medieval era which is present in monuments throughout the town including magnificent baptisteries, basilicas and mausoleums. Ravenna is also the burial place of Dante, the 'father of the Italian language'.
