A Guide to Tropea

Tropea is located the Gulf of St Eufemia and the Gulf of Gioia Tauro and is a town of worldwide fame. The town is situated at the base of Mount Poro on a hill known as 'la rupe' The visitor will admire the spectacular natural environment which includes the multicoloured sea and white Beaches and, in particular, the forty kilometres of coast known as the 'Coast of the Gods' ('costa degli dei'), which is considered a sparkling jewel of nature.

There are numerous Churches of great artistic, historical and religious value to see including the Norman Cathedral, the Church of St Pietro in Ripas, the Church of St Demetrio. Other sights not to be missed include St Leonardo's cliff, Villa Braghò, and the islet of Santa Maria on which there is the Sanctuary of St Maria dell' Isola. Amongst the events held in Tropea are the Festa della Madonna dell’ Isola, the Festa della Madonna di Romania, the 'I Tri da Truci', and the Onion festival.

Vibo Valentia located on the side of the peninsula which overlooks the Gulf of St Eufemia. It is a popular tourist destination today as it was a prominent city in Magna Grecia and it has a stunning coastline. The charming heart of the city is dominated by the Svevo Norman Castle which plays hosts to the State Archaeological Museum.

Sights to see include the Baroque style Cathedral dedicated to the Patron Saint Leoluca and the ruins of the Greek city, Hipponion, located just outside the residential area of Vibo Valentia.

The cuisine of Vibo Valentia is characterized by the use of Peperoncino. Gastronomes will enjoy first courses of 'fileja', the delicacies of 'sanguinaccio', cured meats such as the 'ndujua', Pecorino cheeses and ricotta.
