A Guide to Sorrento

Sorrento is popular for its superb location, set on a plain that overlooks the Bay of Naples. The town’s origins are undefined but certainly date back to the Greeks and the Etruscans. The extraordinary view encompasses the volcano Vesuvius, the city of Naples, and the island of Ischia.

Sorrento makes an excellent base for walks in the surrounding area as well as for exploring Pompei, the Bay of Naples and Naples itself. English speaking tourists seem to have a particular fondness for Sorrento as at times English appears to become Sorrento’s first language. The town has a collection of traditional trades still in operation which include wood engraving and lace work, dating back to the seventeenth century, whilst local jewelers make exquisite coral necklaces in various styles and dimensions.

The sites of Sorrento include the Basilica of Sant'Antonio, the Church of St. Maria del Carmine, the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi, Sorrento Cathedral, the Correale Museum of Terranova, the sedile dominava, the Via della Pietà and the Monastery of St. Maria delle Grazie. Sorrento is ideal for gastronomic lovers with fine cheeses, olives, walnuts oranges and lemons all part of the local produce.

True Italian Luxury
by Wendy (29 October 2010)
Sorrento is a town fit for movie stars, in fact many of its luxury hotels have played host to films stars, from the golden age of cinema to the present day.

Sorrento's many squares and alleys house delightful restaurants and bars - there are many options to choose from for your evening meal. And the shops are open quite late, perfect for after-dinner browsing.

The views of the Isle of Capri are memorable, and if the view proves too much of a temptation, the ferry to Capri departs directly from Sorrento's small pier.
