A Guide to Bovino

Bovino looks out over the towering heights of the Dauno Appenines, Tavoliere delle Puglie and the valley of the Cervaro river, it is the perfect place to relax in tranquil serene surroundings. Bovino is part of the Mountain Community 'Monti Dauni Meridionali' and member of the Club 'Italy's Most Beautiful Villages'. Sights to see are mainly located in the historic heart of the city and they include the imposing Guevara Castle, Bovino Cathedral, the Roman Aqueduct, the Church of St Pietro and the Civic Museum 'Carlo Gaetano Nicastro'. A special mention should be made of the tower known as the 'cavaliere', situated within the castle grounds.

Numerous events linked to traditions of the past are held in 'the borgo', such as the Bonfire for the festival St Giuseppe, the pilgrimage to the sanctuary of Valleverde, the Procession and Fair of St Antonio, the Sagra della Bruschetta, the Procession of Madonna del Carmine, the Festa della Madonna di valleverde, the Fair and Procession of St Celestino Martire and the Procession of St Rita.

Bovino, my home.
by Gino Anzivino (16 October 2007)

As a young child my late parents drove to Bovino every year , the 1,500 miles took us two days , my father only resting for just a few hours at a time, mum would always have plenty of food and drink that she had prepared, there always seemed an urgency to get to Bovino quickly.

Sleeping arrangments were easy,in the car with a blanket,i remember. The first time dad drove it was in a Triumph Herald, great fun . On arrival at Bovino i could see the attraction of this ancient and historic village, with its winding 7.5 Km road upto the centre, passing by Valeverde sacred church, the beautiful villa on the left with its handsome trees the water feature ,museum, and the old church, people laughing hand in hand just strolling up to villa maybe sitting and taking a small refreshment drink. The strong smell of bread being baked, and sauces filled the air,the old ladies sitting outside their homes just watching people enjoying themselves.A home from home town, which as a grown adult, wife and two small children go back to as often as we can, and retrace the drive and thrill of the journey.

Thankyou Bovino for being unchanged after forty years, where my late parents were born and had there own bakery buisness .
