A Guide to Alberobello
Visitors come from all over the world to Alberobello to see the famous ‘Trulli’ coned houses.
The houses are made of stone blocks known as 'chiancole'. Alberobello is situated on two hills which are divided by a river. The oldest part of the town which hosts the largest amount of ‘Trulli’ houses is located on the Western hill. The old town is divided into two districts, Ai piccolo and Monti, which are of national importance and have been granted special status by U.N.E.S.C.O. The hillside is covered with greenery made up of olive and almond trees. The toen has a large craft industry with lots of traditional products being made. There is an 'itinerant' market, held every Thursday morning and the Saturday afternoon market, held in the Coreggia district.
On Wednesday and Saturday evenings the town's butchers organise the 'Fornello pronto', a delicious barbecue. Local festivities are celebrated in honour of the Patron Saints Medici Cosma and Damiano.
