About 77 miles (123 km) to the south of Zacatecas, Aguscalientes is named for the thermal springs found in the area. The city is also known for a network of tunnels beneath it, clearly manmade—the origin of the city’s nickname “the perforated city”—, but no one knows by whom.
Modern Aguascalientes is an important manufacturing center, and several foreign companies have set up operations here.
The city is especially renowned for its spectacular sunsets and the Feria Nacional de San Marcos, Mexico’s oldest state fair, which has been celebrated here since 1604.
Most of the city’s sights can easily be seen on foot.
